An affiliate program lets other people sell your software for you, and you only pay when they bring a paying customer. For a SaaS company that is one of the cheapest acquisition channels there is: no upfront ad spend, and the commission comes out of revenue you would not have had otherwise.
This guide walks through setting one up, from choosing the commission to finding your first affiliates.
Is your SaaS ready for an affiliate program?
You are ready when three things are true:
- People already pay for the product and stay. Affiliates send traffic; your product has to convert and retain it. If most customers cancel in the first month, fix that first.
- You know your numbers. Roughly what a customer is worth over their lifetime and what you can afford to pay to acquire one.
- You have someone to run it. A program needs a few hours a month: approving affiliates, answering questions, paying out.
Step 1: Choose your tracking software
You need a tool that creates affiliate links, tracks signups and calculates commissions. Most SaaS companies use a dedicated affiliate platform that connects to their billing, typically Stripe or Paddle, so recurring commissions are calculated automatically when a referred customer pays.
Look at Rewardful, FirstPromoter, Tolt and PartnerStack, among others. Compare them on:
- Billing integration. It must work with how you charge customers.
- Recurring commission support. Essential for subscription software.
- Payouts. Whether it can pay affiliates for you via PayPal, Wise or bank transfer.
- Price. Most charge a monthly fee; some take a share of affiliate revenue.
Our affiliate software comparison puts 15 of these tools side by side, with prices, fees and integrations taken from their official pages. The affiliate management software page lists tools in this category that run affiliate programs of their own.
Step 2: Set your commission
The most common structure for SaaS is 20% to 30% recurring, paid for 12 months or for the lifetime of the customer. Early-stage companies often go higher, 40% or 50%, to stand out and attract their first affiliates.
A simple way to check what you can afford: take the average customer lifetime value and decide what share of it you would happily pay to acquire that customer. If a customer is worth $600 and you would pay $150 to get one, a 25% commission works.
We cover this in detail in our guide on how much commission a SaaS affiliate program should pay.
Step 3: Decide the rules
Write clear terms before you launch. The essentials:
- Cookie duration. How long after a click a signup still counts. 30 days is standard; 60 to 90 days is a selling point.
- Payout threshold and timing. A minimum payout, for example $50, and a delay, for example 30 days after the customer pays, so refunds can be handled before you pay commission.
- Forbidden methods. Most programs ban bidding on your brand name in search ads, self-referrals, spam and fake coupon claims.
- Disclosure. Require affiliates to disclose that they earn a commission.
Step 4: Build an affiliate page and assets
Affiliates decide in seconds whether your program is worth their time. Your public affiliate page should show:
- the commission rate and structure,
- the cookie duration,
- how and when you pay,
- who your product is for,
- a one-click signup.
Then give approved affiliates what they need to promote you: logos, screenshots, a short product description, key benefits, and ideally a few example posts or videos.
Step 5: Recruit your first affiliates
Launching the program is the easy part. Getting affiliates is the real work.
- Start with your customers. Happy users are your most credible affiliates. Email them and invite them in.
- List your program in directories where affiliates look for programs to promote. You can submit your program to AffiDex for free.
- Reach out to creators who already make content about your category: YouTube tutorials, newsletters, comparison blogs.
- Add a link to your program in your website footer and in-app.

Step 6: Activate and keep affiliates
Most affiliates who join never send a single referral. A short welcome email with promotion ideas, a quick check-in after two weeks, and fast answers to questions make a big difference. Your top affiliates deserve extra attention: higher rates, early access to features, or custom landing pages.
Common mistakes
- Launching with a commission too low to notice. 10% of a $15 plan will not get anyone excited.
- Vague terms. Unclear rules lead to disputes and lost trust.
- No assets. Affiliates will not write your marketing copy for you.
- Set and forget. Programs that are never promoted or managed quietly die.
Next step
Once your program is live, list it on AffiDex so affiliates comparing programs can find it, with your commission, cookie duration and payout terms shown side by side.
