How to Promote Affiliate Links on Reddit Without Getting Banned | AffiDex guide

Reddit is one of the most powerful places to recommend software, and one of the easiest places to get banned. Its communities are built around honest advice, Reddit threads now rank high in Google, and people searching "best tool for X reddit" are close to buying. But Redditors hate being sold to, and moderators remove anything that looks like spam.

Here is how to promote SaaS affiliate links on Reddit in a way that survives moderation and actually converts.

The rules you need to know first

Reddit-wide rules. Reddit's content policy bans spam and manipulation: posting the same link repeatedly, using multiple accounts to upvote yourself, or hiding who you are. Some link shorteners are blocked outright.

Each subreddit's rules. This is where most affiliates fail. Many subreddits ban affiliate links completely, some allow them only in specific threads, and some require a self-promotion ratio. Read the rules in the sidebar and the pinned posts of every subreddit before you post anything.

The old 90/10 guideline. A long-standing Reddit rule of thumb: no more than about 10% of your activity should be self-promotion. Most of what you post should be genuinely useful contributions with no link at all.

Strategy 1: Be the helpful expert first

Pick three to five subreddits where your audience asks questions, for example communities for freelancers, marketers, developers or small business owners. Spend a few weeks answering questions properly, with no links.

This builds karma, a post history that looks human, and a reputation in that community. When you later recommend a tool, people check your profile, and a history of helpful answers makes your recommendation credible.

Strategy 2: Answer "what tool should I use" threads

Every software niche on Reddit has recurring threads like "What do you use for invoicing?" or "Best alternative to X?". These are your best opportunities.

A good answer:

  • explains why you use the tool, with specifics from your own experience,
  • mentions its downsides and who should skip it,
  • compares it honestly with alternatives,
  • only includes a link if the subreddit allows it, and says clearly if it is an affiliate link.

Often the best move is to recommend the tool by name with no link at all. Readers will search for it, and the trust you build pays off elsewhere.

Strategy 3: Link to your content, not to the affiliate link

Where subreddit rules allow it, a link to a genuinely useful tutorial or comparison you wrote converts better than a raw affiliate link, and it is far less likely to be removed. Your article or video then carries the affiliate links.

Many subreddits still ban links to your own content, so check the rules each time.

Strategy 4: Post genuinely useful content

Long, valuable posts do well on Reddit: "How I automated my client onboarding with three tools", "What I learned after testing five email platforms". Share the full value in the post itself. If people ask which tools you used, answer in the comments.

These posts can rank in Google for years, which is why Reddit traffic keeps coming long after you post.

Disclose, always

If a link earns you a commission, say so plainly: "Full disclosure, this is an affiliate link." It is required in many countries, including under FTC rules in the US, and on Reddit, hiding it is the fastest way to get called out, downvoted and banned.

What gets you banned

  • Dropping links in threads with no real answer.
  • Posting the same comment across many subreddits.
  • Brand-new accounts that only post links.
  • Using alt accounts to upvote or "recommend" your own links.
  • Ignoring a subreddit's self-promotion rules.

Pick programs that fit Reddit

Reddit users research carefully and often sign up days later. Favor programs with a long cookie (see long-cookie programs), a free trial, and recurring commissions so that each careful buyer keeps paying you. Browse recurring programs to compare.
